While New Order and bassist Peter Hook have long since parted, their final recordings as a band will be released next week on Rhino. Lost Sirens features eight tracks from 2005′s Waiting For The Siren’s Call sessions, which as drummer Stephen Morris explains were meant for a full LP:
“The intention was always to write four or five more songs and then put it out 18 months or so after the first one. When we unearthed it from the cupboard recently, with the intention of re-editing some of the songs, we all agreed they didn’t actually need it, and it should just be out there. So here it is.”
In truth, they sound pretty much like b-sides from the weakest album in the New Order catalog. But don’t let that stop you from streaming it in full thanks to Rolling Stone.
Hook, who has been playing Joy Division albums live with his band The Light, is about to roll out New Order’s first two albums Movement and Power Corruption and Lies at shows in London and Manchester next week. Bernard Sumner isn’t too pleased, telling NME that the Hooky grudge that got the band back on the road might also push them into the studio:
“I’d just like to make another album. I’m getting a creative itch that I need to scratch. Playing live is great, but it’s not a creative thing, really. It’s a reproductive thing. I’d quite like to make an electronic record, because we’ve not made one for quite a while really.”
Until then, we’ll have to settle for cupboard scraps.
